Sale with a twist

THERE’s a pretty handy wine sale on at Cases Wine Warehouse from today. Marking the second anniversary of the biggest wine retailer in the west (happy birthday!) the sale features swingeing cuts of up to 50% at all price points.

There are quite a few bottles reduced to under €6, such as a matching pair from Trivento, the Argentinean winery of Concha Y Toro –  a chardonnay torrontés blend, and a Malbec both at half price at an eye-watering €4.72 and €5.97 respectively.  Plus there are bin ends from €6.95 a bottle.

However, the bargainista’s happy hunting ground is really among the mid-priced wines. For instance, check out Hardy’s Oomoo Unoaked Chardonnay, McLaren Vale 2005 (half price at €7.97). Fantastic value for a smashing fresh, fruity chardonnay unadorned by timber.

And there’s a twist in the sale: Cases have introduced a fixed margin on all wines over €25. Instead of applying the usual percentage margin to each bottle, they’re taking a fixed sum per bottle regardless of cost. So the higher the original price, the bigger the reduction. Even during the boom I hardly ever recommended wines in that price bracket. I and practically anyone I know don’t want to spend that kind of money. But sometimes wines in that region can be worthwhile for a special occasion.

The good people at Cases say they’ll be adding further reductions as the sale goes on so  go check ’em out.

Cases Wine Warehouse, Riverside Commercial Estate, Tuam Road, Galway (091 764 701) is open seven days a week, 10am to 7pm daily.

See http://www.cases.ie. Delivery (of a minimum of 12 bottles) to Galway, Mayo and Roscommon is free, and a reasonable fiver for everywhere else.
